Have you ever wondered what happens to all of the material collected from archaeological excavations? This unique 2-week program will allow you to learn more about the types of analysis that take place after the excavation is finished.

The Archaeology Summer Institute will introduce educators to Arizona Prehistory and Archeological Lab Analysis and Techniques. Educators will also take an active part in critically reviewing existing archaeological teaching materials, including web-based resources and lessons as well as designing and developing new curriculum materials.

As part of the IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) Program, the Department of Anthropology and the rest of the IGERT Consortium are dedicated to the creation of effective outreach materials for use in K-12 classrooms. To ensure that materials developed are effective and useful for classroom use, it is the goal of the program to invite educators to participate in helping to evaluate, design, and develop curriculum.

The 2-week seminar will expose participating educators to how analysis is conducted so that they have hands-on experience with real-life archaeological research techniques. The purpose is to make educators aware of the many aspects of research that can be conducted in archaeological study. As such, they will have a better idea of how to more effectively fit archaeology into their curriculum.

The Program is designed for classroom teachers that are already teaching curriculum centered on archaeology and/or prehistory or for those who intend to do so in the near future.

Participants in the Summer Institute will receive a stipend, re-certification hours (the number of hours is dependent on the participant’s school district), and a Certificate of Completion. University of Arizona Credit will also be available for those who chose to enroll at the University.
