Jake Harwood is a Professor of Communication and former Director of the Graduate Program in Gerontology. He received his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1994 and taught at the University of Kansas before moving to Tucson. His research focuses on intergroup communication with a particular focus on age groups. He is interested in the ways in which cognitive (e.g., stereotypes) and societal (e.g., mass media) representations of groups relate to communication processes. This includes research focused on grandparent-grandchild relationships and the ways in which stereotypes and attitudes concerning aging are associated with those relationships. He also examines portrayals of groups in the media, and how those portrayals influence attitudes about groups. His research draws on theories of social identity, intergroup behavior, and communication accommodation. He is the co-editor of “Intergroup Communication: Multiple Perspectives” (Peter Lang, 2005) and author of “Understanding Communication and Aging” (Sage, 2007). He has published about 70 articles and book chapters. His recent publications have appeared in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Journal of Communication, Communication Monographs, and Human Communication Research. He is editor of Human Communication Research and book review editor for the Journal of Language and Social Psychology. He teaches courses in research methods/statistics, intergroup communication, and intergenerational communication.
