1. Requirements for the Master's Degree:
   
   
   • HST 695K Historiography in the first year
     
     
   • 18 units in the major field of study
     
     
   • 18 units of colloquium and seminar credit (HST 695/696)

   • reading knowledge of a second language

2. Requirements for the Ph.D. Degree:
   
   
   • HST 695K Historiography in the first year
     
     
   • 6 semesters full-time study beyond the B.A.
     
     
   • 36 units of course work in major field
     
     
   • 9-12 units of course work in minor field
     
     
   • one 695 (graduate colloquium) or 696 (graduate seminar) course each semester
     
     
   • qualifying review
     
     
   • preliminary examination
     
     
   • reading knowledge of two second languages
     
     
   • prospectus and prospectus review
     
     
   • final examination and dissertation defense
     
     
   • complete and approved dissertation
